There is a common misconception in Kenya that “the baby steals calcium from the mother’s teeth.” This is biologically incorrect. However, pregnancy does put your oral health at significant risk due to hormonal shifts.
Pregnancy Gingivitis: Increased progesterone levels make your gums react more aggressively to plaque. This often leads to “Pregnancy Gingivitis”—gums that are red, swollen, and bleed easily during brushing. If left untreated, this inflammation can enter the bloodstream. Studies have shown a link between severe gum disease in mothers and pre-term, low-birth-weight deliveries.
Our Safety Protocol:
- The Second Trimester: This is the ideal time for a dental cleaning. It is safe, comfortable, and essential for reducing inflammation.
- Morning Sickness: If you suffer from vomiting, do not brush your teeth immediately. The stomach acid softens your enamel, and brushing can scrub it away. Instead, rinse with water or a fluoride mouthwash and wait 30 minutes before brushing.
