As a parent in Nairobi, you’re always looking out for your child’s milestones—their first steps, their first words, and their first tooth. But what happens when their permanent teeth start appearing before the baby teeth have even fallen out?
At Twinkle Family Dental Care, we call this the “Shark Teeth” phase. While it might look alarming to see a second row of teeth, it is a very common part of growing up.
What are “Shark Teeth”?
Normally, an adult tooth grows directly under the baby tooth, dissolving its root until it falls out. In “shark teeth” cases, the adult tooth grows in behind the baby tooth. This results in two rows of teeth—just like a shark!
Why Is This Happening?
It usually happens for two reasons:
- The baby tooth root didn’t dissolve properly.
- There is slight crowding in the jaw (very common as children grow).
When Should You Visit Us in Lavington?
Most of the time, nature takes its course. The tongue will naturally push the adult tooth forward once the baby tooth is out. However, you should book an appointment at Twinkle if:
- The baby tooth is rock-solid: If the adult tooth is halfway in and the baby tooth isn’t even wiggling.
- Pain or Swelling: If your child is struggling to eat their favorite meals or complains of gum pain.
- Age Matters: If your child is over 7 and the front teeth aren’t shifting properly.
The Twinkle Touch: Gentle Care for Little Heroes
We know that a trip to the dentist can be scary for a child. Our clinic is designed to be a warm, friendly space where we prioritize gentle dentistry. If a “stubborn” baby tooth needs a little help coming out, we make the process quick, painless, and stress-free.
A Note to Our Twinkle Families: Don’t let a “double row” of teeth cause you stress! Encourage your child to wiggle the tooth daily. If you’re unsure, walk into our clinic for a quick assessment. We accept various local insurances to make your visit as smooth as possible.
