Dental emergencies can happen at any time – during a family football game, while eating dinner, or in the middle of the night. Knowing what to do in those crucial first minutes can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
Common Dental Emergencies and How to Handle Them
Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)
Time is critical! A knocked-out permanent tooth has the best chance of being saved if reimplanted within 30 minutes. What to do:
1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), never the root
2. Rinse gently with milk or saline solution if dirty – don’t scrub
3. Try to reimplant the tooth in its socket if possible
4. If you can’t reimplant, store the tooth in milk or hold it in your cheek
5. Get to our clinic immediately – call ahead so we’re ready for you
Severe Toothache
A sudden, severe toothache often indicates infection or damage that needs immediate attention. What to do:
1. Rinse with warm salt water to clean the area
2. Floss gently to remove any trapped food
3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek
4. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed
5. Contact us immediately for an emergency appointment
Broken or Chipped Tooth
What to do:
1. Rinse your mouth with warm water
2. Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes
3. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling
4. Save any pieces of the tooth
5. Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax if available
Lost Filling or Crown
What to do:
1. Keep the crown if you can find it
2. Apply clove oil to the sensitive area for pain relief
3. Use dental cement (available at pharmacies) as a temporary fix
4. Avoid chewing on that side
5. Schedule an appointment as soon as possible
